MARINE INTERIOR UPHOLSTERY
DESIGN
This area of work can be broken into a number of categories. Small Boats (20 to 30 foot), Medium Boats (30 to 45 foot), Large Boats (45 to 70 foot), Big Boats (70 to 100 foot), and then the start of the Super Yachts.
These groups would then be split between power and sail and the you have blue water vessels meant for ocean passages and coastal or inland-waterways and lakes.
Questions
All of these play a role in the design and fabric choice you will use or apply to the vessel you are working with. My first questions to my client are...
How do you use your boat?
How long do you intend keeping the boat?
What are your intentions for the boat?
What is your budget and time frame for completion of the project?
Sail Boats Projects
More often than not,
When one starts out with either a head liner or an upholstery project this leads into wiring and furniture refurbishment and re-varnishing.
The last project I did we widened a birth and and did some major holding tank alterations as well as updating the nav- station with all required wood work.
The difficulty is in pickling the wood to match the colour of old teak. This requires patience and dedication.
Power Boat projects
This grand Banks 46 job
“Grey Goose”
Started out with the leather upholstery and ended up with a 3 month paint job and new teak decks.
Owned by the Grevendyk's in Seattle. We hauled her out on my dry dock and did the work over winter.
This was so much of a pleasure to work on I bought a Grand Banks myself.
Wonderful visibility and a great handling vessel.
Center-Console & Open-Bow Fishing Boats
Although the bigger boats
Are more interesting, I have done well over 200 open boat suites.
These need to be addressed and treated differently to yachts.
Your shop has to be super clean.
Heat forming the plastics as well as having a working relationship with the manufacturer is vital to restore a boat to its original condition.
This is especially true relating the fabric serial #'s and original fittings - hardware supply.
TANS AND BEIGE
Neutral colors are always Great
I try to work with texture in order to get some tangible aesthetics into the work I do.
The other colors are white and then blue and white.
Cladding with teak is a new thing in the marine industry for small boats.
This is simply accomplished by patterning and fabricating in your shop prior to install.
The install process is quick and simple.
Smaller sailing boats
C&C Yachts
This is a simple and nice design.
I was asked to replace the Upholstery on this model as they had shop soiled the demo model.
Foam forming, patterning cushions and bedding are part of our suite of services.
For newer small boats we normally complete the entire suite as replacing one piece will show up the the older cushions.
Larger Power boats
The new owner did not like the shade of the upholstery…
So we changed it.
I love these jobs, all the work is already done. The fabrics are so new you can use the old fabric as a pattern.
Nice folks, sold their business and decided to go cruising.
I could not think of a better boat to see the world in.
Nordhavn I regard as the benchmark. We replaced all the upholstery in less than three weeks.
